Biographie de l'artiste

Julie Robinson est une artiste-plasticienne qui vit et travaille à Montréal. Diplômée en photographie, elle est aussi autodidacte, s’étant initiée à la sculpture en 1998 puis tournée vers la peinture quelque dix ans plus tard. Très active sur la scène locale, Robinson a acquis une réputation à l’échelle nationale au courant des vingt dernières années. Elle compte à son actif plus d’une quarantaine d’expositions solos, collectives, et de participations à divers évènements artistiques. Depuis 2011, sa pratique est axée sur la peinture à l’huile. Cofondatrice et coorganisatrice de la biennale XL(2011) et de l’OSBL multidisciplinaire Cercle CréatiC(2002), Robinson a également enseigné la sculpture au prestigieux Centre des arts Saidye Bronfman. En 2007, la Mention d’honneur lui est décernée pour l’ensemble de son œuvre, dans le cadre du Festival Rencontre des Arts à St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Robinson a réalisé de nombreuses pochettes d’albums, notamment Live de Karkwa, Piano mal de Sagot et Rooster de Robi Kuster. Elle a également conçu et sculpté le prix Cardozo-Coderre. Son œuvre a été diffusée dans la revue Décover, les quotidiens La Presse et le Journal de Montréal, les hebdos Mirror et Voir ainsi que dans le Guide Culturel web de Radio-Canada. En 2017, Robinson obtint une bourse de Recherche et création octroyée par le Conseil des arts du Canada. En 2019, Robinson fut invitée par le Centre MAI (Montreal Arts interculturel) à présenter une exposition solo intitulée -L’Exhumée-. Plus récemment elle a été invitée à être commissaire pour l’hommage à Riopelle à la maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal, été 2023.

Dju Robinson is a Montreal-born artist working in the Mile-End. A trained photogrpaher, she is also self-taught. She has garnered acclaim as a sculptor from her very beginnings in the late 1990s and began painting some 10 years later. Highly active on the local arts scene for over twenty years, she has earned a solid reputation throughout the country for her creative endeavours. Robinson has exhibited her work in over forty solo and group shows, and has participated in numerous artistic events. A co-founder and co-organiser of the XL biennial in Montreal as well as the multidisciplinary CreatiC Circle (2002), Robinson has also taught sculpture at the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts. In 2007, the Saint-Jean-sur Richelieu Arts Festival awarded her with an Honorable Mention for her professional achievements. She has notably created the artwork for several album covers, including Karkwa’s Live album, Sagot’s Piano Mal, as well as Robi Kuster’s Rooster; she has also designed and sculpted the Cardozo-Coderre prize. Her work has been featured in diverse publications, notably Décover, Montreal weeklies The Mirror and The Hour, La Presse, the Journal de Montréal, and in the CBC online Cultural Guide. In 2017, Robinson was awarded an Explore and Create grant by the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2019, Robinson was invited by the MAI Centre to present a solo exhibit, title -L’Exhummée-. More recently she was invited to be curator for the tribute to Riopelle at the Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal, summer 2023.
